8 Must Have Digital Skills For Working Women

8 Must Have Digital Skills For Working Women

  • By rehbar
  • Careers

Your manager needs a spreadsheet before lunch, a customer is waiting on WhatsApp, and the presentation you emailed has somehow lost its formatting. Sound familiar? The most useful digital skills for working women are not about knowing every app. They are about handling everyday work confidently, protecting your information, and spending less time fixing avoidable problems.

Whether you teach in Lahore, manage accounts in Karachi, work remotely from Multan, or run a home-based clothing business, these skills can make your work easier. You do not need to learn everything together or buy an expensive course before starting. Pick one task that regularly slows you down and begin there.

Which Digital Skills for Working Women Matter Most?

Start with skills you can use in your current work, then build towards the role or business you want next. These eight areas cover the basics without assuming you want to become a programmer or digital marketer.

1. Professional Email and Online Communication

A clear message can save a long chain of confused replies. Learn to write useful subject lines, explain the purpose early, and make the next step obvious. Instead of writing “Please check,” try “Please review the attached quotation and confirm the delivery date by Thursday.”

Understand when to use email, a workplace chat, or a call. Email suits formal approvals; chat works for quick coordination. If an important decision happens on a call, send a short written summary afterwards.

For customer-facing work, practise WhatsApp Business features such as labels and quick replies. Keep professional availability clear rather than feeling obliged to answer every late-night message.

Try this: write three reusable messages for common situations, such as acknowledging an enquiry, requesting missing information, and following up politely.

2. Documents, Cloud Storage and File Management

Being able to create a document is useful. Being able to find the correct version when someone needs it urgently is even better. Learn basic formatting in Microsoft Word or Google Docs, including headings, page breaks, comments, and exporting to PDF.

Create a simple folder system based on clients, projects, or months. Use clear file names such as “ClientName_Proposal_Approved” rather than “final_final_reallyfinal.” Your future self deserves better detective work than that.

Practise sharing a cloud document with the right permissions. Someone who only needs to read a file should not automatically receive editing access. Check access settings before sharing any client or staff information.

Try this: organise one active project folder, remove duplicate drafts carefully, and save a backup of the important files.

3. Spreadsheets and Basic Data Handling

Spreadsheets are useful far beyond accounting departments. A teacher can track attendance, a boutique owner can manage stock, and an office coordinator can organise deadlines. Start with entering data consistently, sorting rows, filtering information, and keeping headings clear.

Next, learn simple formulas such as SUM, AVERAGE, and COUNTIF. Understand the difference between typing a total manually and calculating it with a formula. When the underlying figures change, a properly written formula can update the result.

For a small Pakistani business, a basic order sheet might include the customer name, city, item, amount in PKR, payment status, and delivery status. Keep phone numbers formatted as text so leading zeros are not lost.

Try this: build a weekly expense tracker using sample figures, then check the totals manually before trusting the formulas.

4. Online Research and Information Checking

Searching well means more than opening the first result. Learn to use specific search terms, check publication dates, and look for the original source behind a claim. A polished website or confident social media post is not proof.

This matters when comparing training courses, researching employers, checking suppliers, or preparing a report. For Pakistani policies or official procedures, start with the relevant government department rather than an undated screenshot circulating in a WhatsApp group.

Compare information across reliable sources when the decision matters. Separate sponsored claims from independent information, and watch for articles that describe another country’s rules as if they apply locally.

Try this: research one course you are considering. Check its syllabus, instructor details, total charges, refund terms, and whether its promised outcomes sound realistic.

5. Digital Safety and Privacy

Digital confidence includes knowing when to stop and check. Learn to recognise suspicious attachments, unexpected login requests, fake job offers, and messages that pressure you to act immediately.

Use a different password for each important account, store passwords securely, and enable two-factor authentication where available. Never share an OTP, account PIN, or recovery code with someone claiming they need it to release a payment.

For remote work or freelancing, verify the person or business before sending identity documents. A request to pay money simply to receive a job deserves careful scrutiny.

Keep your device locked and software updated. If you face online harassment, preserve relevant evidence, review privacy settings, and seek help through appropriate reporting channels. Safety is not an optional extra that comes after productivity.

6. Online Meetings and Remote Collaboration

Joining a video call is only the beginning. Learn to test your microphone, choose the correct camera, share a specific window, and use captions when available. Sharing one window instead of your entire screen can prevent private messages from appearing during a presentation.

For teams spread across Pakistani cities, shared calendars and task boards can reduce repeated follow-ups. Write down who owns each task, what completion means, and when it is due.

Power cuts and unstable internet can interrupt even a well-prepared meeting. Keep essential documents available offline and agree on a backup communication method. If your connection drops, a brief update is better than disappearing without explanation.

Try this: hold a practice call with a colleague and rehearse presenting a document without exposing unrelated files.

7. Simple Design and Digital Content

You do not need to become a designer to make a readable presentation, price list, or social media post. Learn basic layout, spacing, colour contrast, and image sizing using a tool such as Canva or PowerPoint.

A home baker in Islamabad might need a menu that customers can read on a phone. An office employee might need slides that explain a proposal without squeezing an entire report onto one screen.

Focus on clarity before decoration. Use readable text, consistent colours, and images you have permission to use. Check names, prices, contact details, and spelling before publishing. If you mix Urdu and English, preview the final design carefully because alignment can change.

Try this: create one useful item for your work, then ask someone to read it on their phone.

8. Responsible Use of AI Tools

AI tools can help you draft an email, outline a presentation, suggest spreadsheet formulas, or simplify difficult wording. The important skill is giving clear instructions and checking the result, not accepting every answer because it sounds confident.

Explain the audience, purpose, tone, and format you need. For example, ask for a polite payment reminder for a Pakistani customer, with a clear due date and no threatening language.

Check names, calculations, facts, and references yourself. Do not upload confidential company documents, customer details, identity records, or private financial information to an unapproved tool. Follow your employer’s rules.

Try this: use a fictional customer enquiry to practise drafting replies. Compare the output with what you would actually feel comfortable sending.

Build These Skills Without Overloading Your Week

Choose one skill and one small outcome. Spend your first practice session learning the basics, the next applying them to a safe sample task, and another reviewing mistakes. Once the task feels manageable, use the skill in real work.

Keep a small collection of examples: a tidy spreadsheet, a clear presentation, or an organised project folder. Remove private information before using anything in a portfolio. These examples give you something concrete to discuss in interviews or performance reviews.

Start With the Problem You Want to Solve

You do not have to be the office technology expert. Start with the task that causes the most frustration, whether that is messy files, confusing spreadsheets, or uncomfortable online meetings. Learn it, practise it, and build from there. Digital confidence grows through useful small wins, not through collecting certificates you never get to use.
