Avoid Pizza, Burgers. Try These 7 Alternatives In Office

Avoid Pizza, Burgers. Try These 7 Alternatives In Office

  • Food

It is nearly lunchtime, the office WhatsApp group is active, and someone has suggested pizza again. If you want alternatives to pizza and burgers, you do not need an expensive meal plan or ingredients nobody can pronounce. A good office lunch can come from your own kitchen, a nearby dhaba or a local home-based cook.

The real challenge is finding something enjoyable that also fits your working day. It should travel reasonably well, be manageable at your desk or in the lunchroom, and leave you satisfied without making the afternoon feel like a struggle.

These seven options offer different flavours, textures and levels of effort. They are not automatically healthier just because they are not fast food; ingredients, portions and cooking methods still matter. But they can certainly rescue you from another round of “same order as yesterday?”

7 Alternatives to Pizza and Burgers Worth Bringing to the Office

1. Daal and Roti for a Proper Homemade Lunch

Daal does not need a special occasion, fancy packaging or a convincing sales pitch. With a soft roti and a little kachumber, it makes a straightforward lunch that feels familiar rather than boring.

Choose whichever daal you actually enjoy: moong, masoor, mash or chana. Keep its consistency slightly thick if you are carrying it to work, and use a leakproof container. Pack the roti separately so it does not absorb moisture before lunchtime.

For variety, change the side rather than cooking an entirely different meal. Cucumber one day, a little achar another day, or leftover cooked vegetables can give the same basic lunch a different feel.

If you are ordering, ask what comes with the daal before adding extra rotis or sides. A simple meal can become an unnecessarily large order surprisingly quickly.

2. Chicken Tikka Wraps Without the Mess

A chicken tikka wrap gives you the convenience of handheld food without repeating the usual burger order. Use a chapati, boneless cooked chicken, shredded cabbage and a small amount of mint yoghurt sauce.

The trick is assembly. Let the chicken stop steaming before wrapping it, dry washed vegetables properly, and carry the sauce separately if lunch is several hours away. Otherwise, your neat wrap may become a wet bundle by the time the meeting finishes.

Leftover chicken works well here, provided it has been stored safely. Remove any bones and cut larger pieces into manageable bites.

When ordering from a nearby restaurant, ask whether the wrap comes in chapati or paratha. Neither needs to be banned, but the choice changes the meal. Request sauce on the side if you prefer controlling how much goes in.

3. Chana Chaat That Counts as Lunch

A tiny bowl of chaat might leave you searching for biscuits soon afterwards. A properly planned chana chaat, however, can be a useful lunch option, especially when you want something that does not require reheating.

Start with boiled chickpeas, then add cucumber, tomato, onion and lemon according to your taste. Boiled potato can make it more substantial, while a boiled egg is another optional addition.

Keep chutneys, yoghurt and crunchy toppings separate until you eat. This protects the texture and lets everyone adjust their own serving if colleagues are sharing.

For an office version, go easy on watery dressings and think about how much raw onion you want before an afternoon client meeting. Some lunch decisions are about nutrition; others are simply about being considerate to the person sitting beside you.

4. Chicken or Vegetable Pulao With Raita

A rice bowl is practical when you want one main container instead of several small boxes. Chicken pulao or vegetable pulao can provide that convenience without needing a complicated recipe.

For a homemade version, use vegetables you already have, such as peas, carrots or beans. If you are making vegetable pulao, chickpeas or a separately packed egg can add variety and make the meal more substantial.

Carry raita in its own sealed container and keep it chilled. A little cucumber salad also works if you would rather skip yoghurt.

When ordering pulao, choose the serving according to your appetite rather than the size of the takeaway box. If the portion is more than you want, separate some before eating and refrigerate it promptly. There is no prize for finishing an oversized lunch.

5. A Chicken and Vegetable Sandwich That Is Not Mostly Sauce

A sandwich can be just as convenient as a burger, but you have more room to decide what goes inside. Try shredded cooked chicken, cucumber and lettuce with a modest spread of yoghurt-based dressing or mayonnaise.

Keep the filling reasonably dry. Remove excess liquid from vegetables, avoid overloading the bread, and use a firm lunchbox rather than squeezing the sandwich into a crowded bag.

Wholemeal bread is an option if you enjoy it, but buying it does not magically improve an otherwise unbalanced lunch. The filling and portion still deserve attention.

For a meat-free version, use mashed chickpeas with lemon and chopped vegetables. Pack delicate vegetables separately if you prefer assembling the sandwich just before eating. It takes a little more effort, but the bread will thank you.

6. Stuffed Paratha With Plain Yoghurt

Paratha is not restricted to Sunday breakfast. A homemade aloo, gobhi or mixed-vegetable paratha can be a satisfying office lunch, particularly when you need something easy to portion and carry.

Use as much oil as you actually need for cooking rather than adding more automatically. Pair the paratha with plain yoghurt and cucumber instead of turning lunch into a collection of rich sides.

Cut it into manageable pieces before packing. If you are using the office microwave, reheat the paratha separately from the yoghurt and cold vegetables.

This is also a useful option for busy mornings: prepare the filling ahead and cook the paratha when needed. Choose a filling you enjoy rather than one you think you ought to like. A packed lunch only helps if you actually want to eat it.

7. Khichdi With Yoghurt and a Crunchy Side

Khichdi deserves better than being treated as food you eat only when unwell. Rice and daal cooked together can make a comforting office lunch, especially when you want mild flavours.

Adjust the texture to your preference, and add suitable vegetables if you like. Pack plain yoghurt separately and bring cucumber or another crisp side to create some contrast.

If your office has a microwave, add a small splash of water before reheating when needed, stir, and check that the food is hot throughout. Keep the container covered appropriately for microwave use.

Khichdi is also easy to adapt for different tastes at home. Keep the main pot mild, then let each person add their preferred seasoning or accompaniment. That is simpler than preparing several separate lunches.

Make Office Lunch Easier to Manage

The best lunch idea is the one you can repeat without creating extra stress. Before choosing your meals, check whether you have access to a fridge, microwave, clean eating space and somewhere to wash containers.

  • Use an insulated lunch bag with ice packs when chilled food cannot go straight into a fridge.
  • Keep yoghurt, cooked chicken and other perishable ingredients chilled rather than leaving them on your desk all morning.
  • Pack sauces separately to prevent leaks and soggy food.
  • For group orders, ask about vegetarian preferences, allergies and spice tolerance before ordering.

Compare the complete order, including delivery charges and extras, rather than the advertised dish price alone. For regular deliveries from a home cook or lunch service, ask about ingredients, delivery timing and how the food is packed.

Give the Office Lunch Routine a Small Reset

You do not have to give up pizza or burgers forever. Start by replacing one familiar order with an option you genuinely like. Bring daal and roti tomorrow, try a tikka wrap later in the week, or suggest pulao for the next team lunch.

A little variety is enough to make lunchtime interesting again. And when the office group asks what to order, you will finally have an answer beyond “anything is fine.”
